All our friends are having babies

All of my friends are having babies, and it’s reminding me that I’m nowhere near close to having one.

Of course, I’m over the moon and thrilled for them; they are all so deserving to have these amazing little humans. I never want them to stop sharing milestones, first steps, and new memories with me; that’s not what this piece is about.

It serves as a reminder of something that I don’t have/ can’t just have as a gay man.

I can’t help but think that I’m setting mine and my husband’s next step back.

We really want kids. The original plan was to start looking into it after we got married. Then it was the start of the following year, then suddenly we were 3/4’s through 2025. Then the start of 2026 rolled around, and now the months are going on, and time is slipping through our fingers again.

I know we’re living our lives, and we have said we want to do the things as the two of us before welcoming a baby. But for us, we have to think about the financial side of it. And that’s one of, if not the biggest, setbacks.

From doing research, it is estimated that surrogacy can cost on average between £30,000 and £60,000.

Yep. You read that right.

That already makes it feel impossible.

Add to all of the laws, politics, etc., and it’s enough to put people off.

I know it’s not the case for all straight couples due to fertility issues and other complications, but the majority get to “See What Happens.” We don’t. I don’t want this to sound like a poor-me piece, but it’s the reality of having kids in a homosexual couple.

I see all these two-dad families on social media, and I’m so happy for them, but I keep thinking, “When will it be our turn?”

I then always circle back to, is it me that keeps moving the time for us to start looking back?

I know deep down that it’s not.

My work situation changed in 2024, going from full-time employment to freelance/self-employed. We have obviously had to watch our money more, and I always put pressure on myself (shock).

Ever since I was young, I’ve always wanted to be a dad. And now everyone around is either pregnant or has just welcomed a little bundle of joy, it hurts a little more that I can’t join them in that wonderful place yet.

Friends always ask, “When will you have children?” “Have you thought about having kids?”, “You’ll make such an amazing dad,” and I know they don’t mean it in any other way than wishing that for us, but right now…right now it cuts deep.

I would have a child tomorrow if I could.

But I can’t.

We have our amazing nieces and nephew, who are incredible human beings. Whilst they’re not genetically ours, we have untold amounts of love for them, and they provide us with the motivation to keep going and dreaming.

I know that it will happen when it’s meant to, and I’m having faith in timing, but right now, it’s a sore subject. I long to have my own children, and I know that day will come when it’s meant to. And that’s just what I have to keep in mind for now.

It will happen when the timing is right.

We’ll be dads someday.

Jump back to 2021, the 19th series of Strictly Come Dancing, when it was announced that Great British Bake Off winner John Whaite would be partnered with the brilliant Johannes Radebe. Not only was this after lockdown, where the return of the show meant some sense of normality was returning. But, for me, and so many other queer people in the UK, to see two grown men dancing with one another on national television was a game-changer. I remember writing on an Instagram post at the time:

“Dear John and Johannes, You might not have taken home the glitter ball trophy, but I just want to say a huge thank you to you both for putting the representation on a stage for the world to see. Men can dance, men can dance with other men, men can have a softer side, men can have emotions, and none of that makes them less of a person. I might be 27, but seeing the pair of you doing what you did each weekend gave me hope and will do for so many younger generations. John spoke about how Johannes gave him a newfound confidence, and you have both done that not just for me, but for so, so, so many people. You’ve made me realise that there isn’t anything wrong with being who I am. There is nothing wrong with being a bit different. There is nothing wrong with embracing who you are. Now, being 30 in 2025, and seeing the dazzling Drag Queen that is La Voix, whose real name is Chris Dennis, on my screen, is giving me all the feels again. And now, more than ever, we need someone like her to remind us that in these dark times we’re living in, you need to continue to sparkle. For those who aren’t familiar with La Voix, she was a competitor of the 2024 series of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK and is a brilliant performer. My husband and I got married on May 24th, 2024, at Great Fosters in Egham, Surrey. It was the most perfect day, but we didn’t know that it was tied to a well-known Disney movie.

When planning our big day, we visited four venues, and Great Fosters was the last. We narrowed it down to two: Great Fosters and Botley’s Mansion. After spending a few hours writing a pros and cons list of both, we settled on Great Fosters. Why? The gardens. It has a beautiful traditional Japanese bridge, which is covered in Wisteria and frames the historic moat on the grounds. However, we didn’t know the significance of these gardens until about a month ago.

Those of you who know me will know that I am a big Real Housewives fan. I remember growing up and discovering The Real Housewives of New Jersey as I lay in bed late at night before getting up for school, seeing Teresa flip the table, watching Jaqueline and Teresa fall out for the 100th time, Caroline defending her family to the end of the earth, and Ashley pulling Danielle’s hair - so scandalous. Allowing yourself to have a slow week

I posted a video on my TikTok (see below), which was a cute quote video that said: “Anyone feel like we’re living in the era of intense pressure in all areas of our lives? Work, family, friends, ourselves. You do you, as long as you’re happy and enjoying yourself, that’s all that matters." Now, whilst I do truly believe we should all do what we want to do, and make sure we’re enjoying ourselves, I feel a great sense of difficulty doing this at the moment. I start to, and I try to continue to repeat it as a mantra or affirmation, but my subconscious likes to pull me back. So, I decided that I was going to allow myself to have a slow week this week.
